Description
Written and produced by Pete Anders and Vini Poncia.
One of the great surf-styled songs from the 60s. Right up there with the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean and the Rip Chords.
“New York’s A Lonely Town” reached #32 in the US in 1965 and has been revived by Dave Edmunds and Jeffrey Foskett (of the Beach Boys band).
Hailing from Rhode Island, Pete Anders and Vini Poncia began as the Videls, scoring with “Mr. Lonely” (US #73) in 1960. They relocated to the West Coast to work with Phil Spector and wrote “Do I Love You” and “The Best Part Of Breaking Up” for the Ronettes.
They returned to New York and cut three singles for Red Bird before signing on as producers with Artie Ripp’s Kama Sutra label. While there, they also continued to have hits as recording artists: the Trade Winds’ “Mind Excursion” (#51, 1966) and the Innocence’ “There’s Got To Be A Word” (#34, 1967).
Pete and Vini were inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall Of Fame in 2012. There’s a lot more about them at the Hall Of Fame’s website Please visit at:
