Description

From 1979. Beautifully sung and it is so amazing to see the couple together.

This was done for the show Naya Zindagi Naya Jeevan in the UK in the early 80s. Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan was a BBC television programme broadcast from 1968 until 1982.

It was the first major programming for Hindi and Urdu-speaking viewers and represented the beginnings of regular broadcasting in the UK for non-native English speakers. Until that point, all BBC programmes had assumed an English-speaking audience.

Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan means 'New Life'. It started out in 1965 recorded at Gosta Green studios in Birmingham (prior to the construction of Pebble Mill) as a short series entitled 'Make Yourself at Home'. The original 405 line tape of the first episode does exist; there may actually have only been one regularly repeated. The actual tape box had the word "Immigrants" written in black marker on the side. This was a programme with magazine articles in Hindi and Urdu.

Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan eventually was renamed 'New Life'. In the 1980's it became 'Asian Magazine' and finally 'Network East'.

Quite a few episodes do exist and because many stars of the asian subcontinent music industry appeared on the show, many insert tapes also survived. These included Ravi Shankar, Lata Mangeshkar, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Noor Jehan, Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali etc... In 1992 these original quad tapes were going to be wiped, so the department arranged for them to be transferred to Beta SP. They as far as I know transferred over 120 two inch tapes in the end, although I don't think that every one of them survived the move from Pebble Mill despite the best efforts from some conniseurs.

Asian Magazine was mainly one inch and all survive... but not in the BBC as I discovered. Some idiot had sent all the tapes to the NFA. The good news is that they are preserved. The bad news is that they can't be accessed easily or without charge from the NFA. Great series.
