UNCHAINED MELODY, Vito & The Salutations, (Herald #583) 1963
Flipside: HEY, HEY BABY – This is truly one of the greatest uptempo songs ever recorded by a vocal group! The ballad versions of “UNCHAINED MELODY” have been recorded by many artists, too many to list. It took some real innovation to come up with this uptempo arrangement, just outstanding!!
“UNCHAINED MELODY” by Vito & The Salutations did chart nationally on Billboard in November 1963 for 6 weeks and reached #66. Group members singing on this recording are Vito Balsamo (lead, baritone, and falsetto). Raymond (JP) Russell (1st tenor), Shelly Buchansky (2nd tenor) and Frank Fox (bass, baritone),
Vito & The Salutations are also well known for their classic cover version of “GLORIA” (Rayna #5009) 1962.
I spoke to group member Frank Fox prior to this upload and he told me that they had a lot of fun recording “UNCHAINED MELODY” and finished the song on the 3rd take.
I’m uploading “UNCHAINED MELODY” on my YouTube channel to honor a very special friend, Shelly Buchansky who passed on January 1, 2019. Shelly was a real talent and dedicated performer. Through the many years he performed and recorded with Vito/Salutations and The Five Discs, he was a true professional and one of the nicest guys in the music business…he will be sadly missed by all.
Enjoy this great uptempo version of “UNCHAINED MELODY” by Vito & The Salutations. A real classic! It doesn’t get any better than this!
