Description
Anchors Aweigh is the official US Navy march since 1907. It was first composed by Charles A. Zimmerman (1861-1916) who was the lieutenant and had been bandmaster of the US Naval Academy since 1887. The origins come from an old Dutch sailors’ expression (Weigh Anchor), that means to bring all anchors aboard the vessel for departure.
The Marine’s Hymn is the official hymn of the US Navy Marine Corps, first introduced by Francesco Maria Scala, USMC’s first director. It is the oldest official song of the United States Armed Forces, authorized by the Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1929. The hymn is usually sung at the position of attention as a gesture of respect.
