In the true spirit of “Valentine’s Day”, when lovers everywhere are finding ways to express their feelings & celebrate their love for each other, this song explores the romantic exploits of a couple re-igniting their relationship. However, this is only a metaphor for the broader social dynamics that prevail throughout the world, not just in South Africa. At a time when we’re experiencing unprecedented social & political upheaval globally, it seems appropriate to take a moment to reflect on our humanity. When all is said & done, in the final analysis we are fostering either love… or hate.
Whilst this might seem a gross exaggeration of the reality, what is ultimately achieved thru every little act we engage in has a rippling effect in the greater scheme of things. Our interactions with people around us impact on the community, society, the country & ultimately… the world. Many people are aware of this, but most aren’t. Fewer still see any point in trying to change the world on such a micro-level. It just seems so futile.
A friend explained to me that the “devil” is hell-bent on leading us to destruction by sowing hatred everywhere. The evidence certainly supports his belief. It seems there’s always something… something to justify the inhuman cruelty meted-out on the basis of superficial, trivial issues that could easily be resolved through dialogue & committed solutions designed for the satisfaction of all parties involved. Yet it seems to elude us. The “devil” wins every time! Isn’t it about rising above our differences to seek harmony rather than chaos? If the issues are not “racial”, then they’re “religious”. If not “class”, then “status”. Considering the extent to which we’ve evolved as a species, pioneering technology & advancements beyond our wildest dreams in every aspect of human endeavour, isn’t it mind-boggling that we can’t achieve peace & harmony in the world?
Unless we push against our impulses to focus on differences rather than similarities… harmony rather than dissent… which will take some compromise & a degree of tolerance, we will never achieve meaningful co-operation & unity amongst peoples of the world. It starts with each individual’s quest for inner peace. This creates a desire for outer peace… & finally the motivation & means to realize this ideal start to take shape .
“Why bother”, you might ask? Well… unless we move in that direction individually & collectively, we are destined for self-destruction. Never mind race, religion, wealth, power or status… we need a world to live in that’s safe & sound... for everyone. Isn’t that good enough reason to come together… & make every day “Valentine’s Day” ?!?
Have a blessed one… filled with peace & love. You deserve it!
