Description
* The vocal harmony groups of the late 1950s and early 1960s, later known as “doo-wop groups,” were rock and roll’s most significant form of urban expression. Created and developed to its highest level by African-American youth, doo-wop was soon adopted by Italian-American teenagers living in city neighborhoods who came in contact with this musical form through radio, records, stage shows, and street performances. By fusing this African-American music with their own rich Italian-American musical and cultural heritage, the Italian-American groups were able to produce their own version of doo-wop, which was much more than mere imitation. *
