The title song from VIVA CRISTO REY! – a musical play that traces the life of Blessed Miguel Pro (1891 – 1927) during a period when Mexico, a strong Catholic country, was under the rule of two successive dictators, in a political climate hostile to the practice of religion. A man of great compassion and cheerfulness, heroic courage and faith, Miguel became a priest and continued to administer sacraments to the people. He was eventually captured and executed on a false pretext. “Viva Cristo Rey!” (Long Live Christ the King!) was his defiant final cry. His death caused the people of Mexico to take to the streets for the first time in years, openly declaring their faith.
Written, produced, and performed in Singapore in connection with the Jesuit Twin Celebration 1990-1991. Script conceived by Julie Phua, with original songs written by Patrick Goh.
