The song, written by Michael Brown, Bob Calilli, Tony Sansone, was recorded by The Left Banke in 1966. It was also a hit for the Four Tops in 1968. I think this is a painfully beautiful song. It has been covered by dozens of artists; one of my favorite covers is by Jimmy LaFave.
