Back in 2001 Meshuggah released the compilation album "Rare Trax". War is the opening track and it features programmed drums. That means the drums were written in a software and played by a computer. No one doubts the skills of Tomas Haake, but this track is really extreme even for Death Metal drummers back in the day. Not many drummers could afford to play 32nd notes in a odd metronome mark of 121,5 BPM (or 16th notes in 243 BPM, if you will).
In this video I took my chances and added a few different fills, because most of the fills on the original recording are quite repetitive, probably by the fact it was programmed, so I decided to make it a bit more interesting for me to play, and to give it a more human aspect.
All in all, this song really pushes the drummer into a very intense way of playing and it demands a lot of power. Not an easy task, whatsoever.
