We All Need A Little Christmas is from the musical Mame which first opened on Broadway in 1966 starring Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur.

In the musical (and film), the main character Mame Dennis (whose life motto is "Life is a banquet and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death") sings this song to cheer herself and a few others up after she has loses all her money in the 1929 Wall Street crash.

Some amazing "dames" have played the dream role of Mame - most recently Bette Midler on Broadway. I had tickets to see her in the show but sadly couldn't make it to New York :( Other notable Mames have included Celeste Holm, Ginger Rogers, Jane Russell, Elaine Stritch, Juliet Prowse and of course Lucille Ball who starred in the 1974 film.

Is it too early to do this as part of my Sunday at the Musicals with Mette videos? Naaaa. This year, of all years, we need a little joy. Some sparkle. Some twinkling lights. We've earned it. And it's a good thing I don't mind making a fool of myself, because I've pushed the boat out on that in this one!
