This video shows the COMPLETE BASSLINE AS PLAYED note-for-note with all Alphonso Johnson's ad-libs and improvisations, glissandos, nuances and ad-libs.
A Bass Player You Should Know. Alphonso Johnson's style is characterized by being 'articulate', using slides, slurs, double-stops, and triplets, and playing really Funky. In fact, when performing the task of transcribing Alphonso's bassline note-for-note there were multiple times when it was necessary to dot a note to indicate it was played short and there were notes tied together as well. Alphonso used a 'Wah-Wah' pedal effectively during his bass solo in this monumental tune written by himself and Bandleader Joseph Zawinul. To me, however, the brilliance of Alphonso is not just in his ascending line accented with a double stop, but rather, his 'funkiness' and all his articulations during the solo sections, and in this video one may observe how Alphonso developed his basic bassline th
As a matter of luck, when Weather Report toured Michigan in 1974 or 1975 they performed in a campus gymnasium. I was seated with 3 brothers in the front row, and after the concert I saw Alphonso standing alone next to the stage and I approached him, my Idol. I asked him about their music, if it was partially written out and partially improvised and he assented. Then I mustered up the courage to ask my Bass Idol one single question: "What do I have to do to become really good on bass?" A8lphonso replied right away, "Develop your ideas." So, I have never forgotten his words, nor how awesome he played along with Weather Report that evening. And to Alphonso Johnson I dedicate this Bass Cover so his Legacy and Awesome Bass Playing Style may be known by all.

The tone of my bass: My Expert Guitar Luthier attached a used, genuine vintage 1960 Sprague tone capacitor (value 0,1 mdf) to the electronics and replaced the factory issued capacitor of my Fender Roadworn Jazz Bass so as to create a 60's tone, while I have worked with the knobs on my bass and amp to attain a flat, yet punchy tone. The bass in this video is a Fender Jazz Bass Roadworn MIM, (purchased at Sam Ash, Phoenix, Arizona) with three year old Ernie Ball slinky flatwound medium gauge strings, with both pickup controls on about 7 and the tone switch is in the 'middle', and am playing through a Marshall B25 MK II amplifier with the tone settings:
Bass at 3 o'clock, Middle at 3 o'clock, Treble at 1 o'clock.
