The names of the song's authors have not been preserved. However, the history of the song itself can be traced back to the middle of the 17th century. By 1880, it was already widely known, including in southern Germany.
At the beginning of the 20th century. the song "Wenn die Soldaten" was popular. A German postcard from the First World War, sent from the front in 1916, has been preserved. The leaflet is called "Wenn die Soldaten durch die Stadt marschieren". On the back was printed the text of a song with a soldier's instruction that he did not meet many girls at the front.
