When employers ask this common interview question, they want to see if you are a well-rounded individual who has pursued their passions, to see what your skills can offer the role and to see if you would be a good culture fit for their company.

Most employers don't want to hire a workaholic with no life outside of the office, let your personality and enthusiasm shine through the hobbies and interests you discuss.

One important tip we will say is do not lie! An employer will be able to tell straight away if you are telling a fib, and any follow-up questions asked could land you in a hugely embarrassing situation.

Prove to the employer that you are keen and can apply the skills you’ve learned from your hobbies to the job.

Speak in depth about 1-3 hobbies/ interests, with examples and even mention your personal goals for the future too.

Don’t choose interests that are too generic like ‘listening to music’ and try to avoid mentioning hobbies that are inappropriate for a work environment, such as taboo subjects or politics!

Be sure to familiarise yourself with variations of questions about hobbies and interests, so that you don't get caught off guard in the interview!
