Description
100 years ago, the 19th amendment was ratified, guaranteeing that the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
It is important to note that while the 19th amendment was an important victory for women's voting rights, it did not guarantee the right to vote for all women. While it is true that women could no longer be prevented from voting on account of their sex, there were still obstacles in the way of suffrage for many marginalized groups. Native Americans were not considered U.S. citizens until 1924, and Black Americans were blocked from voting through the use of poll taxes, literacy tests, white-only primaries, and other acts of intimidation. While many Black women in the north were voting after 1920, it would be decades before most Black women in the south obtained the right to vote.
Still, the 19th amendment is a cornerstone of women's rights, and the LHS Select Singers are proud to celebrate the work of the suffragettes. Thank you to all of the women who submitted photos of themselves and their families exercising their right to vote.
We hope that each of you will use your powerful voice to vote on November 3rd.
