For this Memorial Day in 2023, the United States Air Force Band's premier rock band, Max Impact, is proud to present an original Air Force composition titled "When They Come Home." This song is dedicated to honoring and paying tribute to the selfless sacrifices of the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving and protecting the United States of America.

In an attempt to capture the essence of Memorial Day, "When They Come Home" tells the story of two service members departing from home for deployment and the emotional impact it has on their families. The song ends on a solemn note of remembrance, portraying the final journey of a service member and our promise to forever keep them in our hearts.

Tuesday came faster than they wanted it to.
Dad was packing his things and lacing up his boots.
Mom wasn't saying much, she'd been through this before.
But she had that look on her face, it was sayin’ so much more.

I'll think about you every day.
Please be safe. I'll hope and pray.

When he comes home, they'll be right there to greet him.
And tell him that they love him and hold him in their arms.
Yeah, this life is too short not to count the things that matter most of all.
They'll show him that they’re proud of what he's done.

When he comes home.

Emmy knew that it was time to go.
She told her mom and dad that she'd be fine, but she really didn't know.
She held her baby one last time and she kissed the boy she wed.
With tears in his eyes, he looked at her and said,

I'll think about you every day.
Please be safe. I'll hope and pray.

When she comes home, he'll be the first to meet her.
And tell her that he loves her and hold her in his arms.
Yeah, this life is too short not to count the things that matter most of all.

Sunday came faster than they were ready for.
It was supposed to be another convoy and nothing more.
Well, the bombs and the bullets flew, they all made it through.
Except for one…
Somebody's partner, somebody's child, a loved one.


When they come home, we'll be right there to meet them.
And tell them that we loved them and hold them in our hearts.
Yeah, their lives were too short, but they gave the thing that mattered most of all.
We'll show them that we're proud of what they've done.
