The field is hushed in amber light, as though the world itself is holding its breath. A black cat sits alone in the tall grass, still and small against the encroaching dusk. The golden blades ripple around it, whispering secrets it cannot quite grasp. Above, the sky deepens into shadow. Around, there is nothing but space.

Why am I here?

It is not a question asked aloud, but one that settles deep in the bones. The cat does not move. It only watches—eyes wide, catching the last light, reflecting something ancient and uncertain. There is no path behind, no clear reason ahead. Only this patch of quiet. Only the pulse of time stretching out like the grass itself.

It remembers warmth, once. The shape of voices. The rhythm of days that meant something. But here—here is different. Here is still.

Perhaps it wandered too far. Or perhaps it has always been here, always asking. Always listening for an answer that never comes.

The wind brushes past, soft as memory. The cat blinks, not in fear, not in sadness—but in a stillness so complete it feels like the world itself is paused.

There is no reply.

But the grass moves gently around it, and the dark waits kindly, and for now, that is enough.
