This video took a lot longer than it really should have because the weather was so bad that the footage was just a bit icky and uninspiring (and we're togged up like abominable snowmen) so I hope you guys don't mind!

Dylan was a little strong on the ground to start with so we took a week getting him more established with manners, and he took two long reining session as the first was rather worrying for him.

After leaning over a few times, he wasn't even worried about having a rider on properly, despite the awful weather!

He quickly progressed to having both a rider and a saddle on and was very good, just lacked balance so he would fall out through the shoulder and get a little wiggly.

This is pretty common in backers so we have to 'trust the system' and carry on as we would, which can be very hard to do when we know that what we teach horses in the backing process stays with them as the start of their education. When we have wobbly horses, we find most of them prefer to be corrected with a schooling whip as they are more used to being guided over on the ground by someone's 'arm'.

He could be a little spooky but was very genuine about it and it was easy to see his confidence grow!

In his first canters, he had a few bucks and little broncs but soon understood that: yes, we did want him to go forward, but: no, we didn't want him to do so with his head between his knees.

We were very pleased when Dylan left us hacking alone, and in company, being happier in traffic and cantering like a dude. Absolutely loving the updates from his loaner and he's doing so well!
