Yes, there REALLY IS a Wolverton Mountain, and there REALLY WAS a Clinton Clowers who lived there. Merle Kilgore wrote this as a joke for his uncle - yes, Clifton Clowers himself - and went up to his cabin on the mountain and played it to him. Old Clifton listened and said - "Son - you got yourself a hit there!" When Merle protested that it was just a joke, his uncle insisted - no, it was a hit song. Claude King heard it and agreed, recorded it and it was a smash hit. It's also annoyingly infectious, so be warned.
